Sustainable mobility
We contribute to developing a sustainable model of city, where public transport plays a key role.
Approximately 50% of pollution of the Barcelona metropolitan area stems from motorised traffic.
Barcelona is the city with the highest density of vehicles per KM2 in Europe (1,079,523 vehicles/ day). It is also among the 5 most polluted cities in Europe, twice as much as Paris or London.
TMB is proposed as the main solution by offering a sustainable, quality public transport service.
TMB hence contributes to developing a sustainable model of city, with the following characteristics:
Efficient consumption of land
TMB is the urban public transport system that guarantees a more efficient consumption of land: the metro has the capacity to transport 16,000 people/hour and a standard bus, 1200 people/hourr.
On the other hand, private vehicles only have a capacity of between 660 and 1,180 people/hour.
More sustainable mobility system and quality public area
TMB contributes to reducing atmospheric pollution (NOx, PM, CO2) and acoustic pollution, along with the fight against climate change (CO2).
As an urban collective transport system and taking into account the carbon footprint of the fleet, travellers who choose TMB over the use of private vehicles, reduce the emissions of CO2 from 183 g/tk (traveller per kilometre) to 115g/vkm in relation to a diesel bus or 35.6g/tkm for electric buses and 23.7g/tkm for the metro. Similarly, emissions of NOx and PM, which are related to local pollution in cities and to phenomena such as acid rain, are greatly reduced.
Social cohesion, maximum self-sufficiency and diversity of uses
TMB contributes to social cohesion, offering transport accessible to everyone. In this way, the public can do without the car to travel round the city.
It also guarantees maximum energy efficiency in the transport system, and it contributes to connecting the various uses of the city for economic and social development.
Information on the efforts carried out to make travel on the public transportation network safe and ensure low environmental impact is available in the document "TMB in action, a sustainable journey".
